The issue of safety and security in residential environments is constantly topical, not least in areas that are currently severely affected by crime and unrest in the neighborhoods. Property owners want to protect their property and residents as tenants want a safe environment where they can feel trust in their neighbors and the local community. Doing the right thing today is a tightrope walk: some measures to increase safety and security risk worsening the environment by signalling danger, while new digital solutions to control people’s movements raise burning questions about the surveillance society and privacy in people’s own homes.
By starting to identify the motivations and effects of smart surveillance technologies, this will contribute to both further research and the important public conversation about what makes neighborhoods and homes safe and secure.
